Sam / Wes Ambigram
Sam / Wes is a two-name pair built from three natural rotations: s stays s, an upside-down a reads e, and an m becomes w. It is a useful test case for couple and friendship tattoos where both names are short.
Upright — sam
Upside down — wes
Same pair, seven fonts
Every font is a complete 26 × 26 pair alphabet. Compare the shape of the m/w, a/e or l/e cells before you choose one.
Letter by letter
Each cell has to read as one letter of sam and, turned 180°, as one letter of wes.
| Cell | Upright | Flipped | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | s | s | s is rotationally symmetric in these fonts, so the outer letters need no redesign. |
| 2 | a | e | The anchor. A single-storey a turned upside down shares its bowl with an e; the crossbar is the part that needs care. |
| 3 | m | w | The natural pair at the end. The m and w shapes are rotations of each other. |
Design notes
- Check both names at the same distance. Two-name designs often make the first name look stronger than the second.
- Try all seven fonts: DSMONO and DKSambi change the character of the m/w pair noticeably.
If it is for a tattoo
- A couple or friendship tattoo needs both names to feel equally important. Rotate the proof and look at it from arm's length.
- Ask your artist to keep the a/e cell open enough that it does not fill in over time.
- Treat the download as a reference for your artist, not a finished stencil. See the ambigram tattoo generator for the checklist.
