Angel / Devil Ambigram
Angel / Devil is a classic tattoo pair: good on one side, bad on the other. Both words have five letters, so it works as an equal-length ambigram. The middle e lines up with an e on the other side, which gives the design an anchor.
Upright — angel
Upside down — devil
Same pair, seven fonts
Every font is a complete 26 × 26 pair alphabet. Compare the shape of the m/w, a/e or l/e cells before you choose one.
Letter by letter
Each cell has to read as one letter of angel and, turned 180°, as one letter of devil.
| Cell | Upright | Flipped | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | a | l | A single tall stroke has to become a whole a. Designers often stretch the bowl of the a into a tall loop for the l. |
| 2 | n | i | An i is one stroke of an n. The n arch is the extra part that needs disguising in the devil reading. |
| 3 | g | v | Hard. The descender of g and the point of v rarely agree; expect to redraw this pair by hand. |
| 4 | e | e | The anchor of the design. An upside-down e overlaps an upright e almost completely. |
| 5 | l | d | The l becomes the stem of the d. The two bowls have to meet in the middle; this cell decides whether the pair feels balanced. |
Design notes
- Build the design outward from the centre e, which already works in both directions.
- Compare all seven fonts before you pick a direction. The e/e anchor is stable; the a/l and g/v cells are where the fonts differ most.
- g/v is the weak spot. A decorative flourish or wing shape there is a common way to hide extra strokes.
If it is for a tattoo
- Angel/devil designs are often split into a halo and horns motif. Keep the lettering simple if you add imagery.
- Take the PNG to your artist, not a screenshot. They can redraw and vectorize it for the stencil.
- Treat the download as a reference for your artist, not a finished stencil. See the ambigram tattoo generator for the checklist.
