Good / Evil Ambigram
Good / Evil is a short, four-letter pair with a strong meaning, which makes it popular for small tattoos. It is also a tough pair: the round letters of good have to turn into the straight strokes of evil.
Upright — good
Upside down — evil
Same pair, seven fonts
Every font is a complete 26 × 26 pair alphabet. Compare the shape of the m/w, a/e or l/e cells before you choose one.
Letter by letter
Each cell has to read as one letter of good and, turned 180°, as one letter of evil.
| Cell | Upright | Flipped | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | g | l | The descender of the g turns into the tall stroke of the l. The bowl of the g is the extra part. |
| 2 | o | i | A full circle against a single stroke. Hand-drawn versions often narrow the o into a tall oval so its side can read as the i. |
| 3 | o | v | Another round-to-pointed pair. A narrow, slightly pointed o makes the v easier to see. |
| 4 | d | e | The best pair of the four. The bowl of the d becomes the body of the e; the stem is the extra stroke. |
Design notes
- Both middle letters are o, so whatever trick you use for o/i and o/v should look consistent.
- Narrow, tall letterforms help this pair more than wide round ones.
If it is for a tattoo
- Because the word is short, it works on a wrist or ankle. Check the stroke spacing at that size with your artist.
- Treat the download as a reference for your artist, not a finished stencil. See the ambigram tattoo generator for the checklist.
